This cluster of cultural facilities is just a 5\u201310 minute walk from Osaka Metro\u2019s Higobashi Station on the Yotsubashi Line or Yodoyabashi Station on the Midosuji Line.<br \/>\nThe science museum is a popular place for field trips and it actually has its own world-class planetarium. The entire museum underwent got an upgrade in February 2022 so it\u2019s even nicer than it was before. Planetarium tickets are \u00a5600. A<br \/>\nAnd you can purchase a combination ticket for \u00a51000.<br \/>\nFor those junior high school age or younger, admission to the museum is free and planetarium tickets are \u00a5300. So the pricing is reasonable for families.<br \/>\nIf you have the Osaka Amazing Pass or the Enjoy Card (day pass for the Osaka Metro), admission may be free or reduced so be sure to show your pass when you purchase tickets. <\/p>\n<p>The planetarium generally has two different programs. The programs are geared toward families with young children and elementary school students. It\u2019s a Carl Zeiss Model II Projector that worked behind the scenes in Japan\u2019s very first planetarium. This planetarium opened in 1937 in the Osaka City Electricity Science Museum, which evolved into the modern day Osaka Science Museum.<br \/>\nConsidering that Carl Zeiss camera parts are so expensive, I imagined this special machine with so many different lenses must have cost a lot. So I looked it up on the Osaka City website and I was right.<br \/>\nIt says that the planetarium construction costs was equivalent to that of 2\u20133 elementary schools at the time, over \u00a5460,000. Due to the high price, there was much debate over the planetarium\u2019s construction.<br \/>\nIsn\u2019t that a strange way of putting it\u2014equivalent to 2\u20133 elementary schools? I\u2019m not sure exactly how much it costs to build an elementary school these days, but you get the picture. It was an extravagant expenditure.<br \/>\nWith that in mind, I turned my attention to the show.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/maido-storage.oss-cn-hongkong.aliyuncs.com\/maido\/uploads\/2022\/12\/osaka-sci-museum9.jpg\" alt=\"\u6620\u753b\u9928\u306e\u3088\u3046\u306a\u30d7\u30e9\u30cd\u30bfLike a movie theater, the seating is on an incline. The comfortable seats recline and you can look straight up at the fake sky. It is huge!\nThe dome itself is 26.5 meters in diameter and apparently ranks 7th in the world for its size. (By the way, no. 1 is in the planetarium in Nagoya, measuring 35 meters across.)\nThe show started with a short explanation of the sky over Osaka before moving onto the main part of the program. The announcer spoke so clearly and was so easy to understand, I felt like I was listening to the radio. \nUnder the ceiling of stars, I sunk deeply into the quiet darkness. There\u2019s something so romantic about this atmosphere, especially if you are right in the middle of the city. The menu covers all the bases and crowd favorites. Since this is a science museum, I couldn\u2019t resist the space themed curry plate. I think I see a rocket made of a hot dog and the plumes of smoke in broccoli color.<br \/>\nEven kids who hate carrots might be tempted to eat these fun stars. It\u2019s clearly made to please children since the curry itself was fairly sweet. And the size was fairly big so it would be plenty for lunch.<br \/>\nAnd there are other limited-time dishes on the menu that coincide with the planetarium programs.<br \/>\nDefinitely visit the cafe to recharge.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anchor3\" style=\"color: #0066FF;\">\u25a0Hands-on Displays &#038; Exhibits<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the exhibits.<br \/>\nFirst you head up to the 4th floor and peruse the exhibits as you head downstairs. Osaka\u2019s aquarium Kaiyukan is a similar style. Here\u2019s the sun!<br \/>\nThe surface is covered in real footage of the sun projected onto the display. At the Ball Machine! I couldn\u2019t keep my eyes off it, following the journey of one ball all the way from top to bottom.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a lot of different displays that will stop you in your tracks and keep you busy observing, feeling, and using all different senses to play with the marvels of science in easy-to-understand hands-on exhibits.<br \/>\nBefore I visited the museum, I expected it to be full of boring signs and long explanations, but that wasn\u2019t the case at all. Of course there are plenty of explanations and lots of English signage. But reading it or not is completely up to you.<br \/>\nIt is such an experience heavy museum.<br \/>\nOne exhibit allows you to smell artificial fragrances paired with the corresponding natural fragrance. You really use all your five senses.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s great for kids, but you don\u2019t have to be a child to enjoy it. Come here with your friends or on a date and I guarantee you will have plenty to talk about.<br \/>\nPlus there is the stunning planetarium too.<br \/>\nThe museum is definitely somewhere worth a visit on Nakanoshima.
