Rumor has it that the wisteria at Fujiidera Temple has bloomed for about 1,300 years, ever since the temple was founded!<\/p>\n
The temple was established in 725 by the monk Gy\u014dki at the request of Emperor Sh\u014dmu. The wisteria planted at that time has been carefully nurtured throughout the centuries, and still blooms beautifully to this day.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, the temple\u2019s name, \u201cFujiidera,\u201d is also believed to have been inspired by these lovely wisteria flowers. Although the characters are different, the sound word for wisteria in Japanese is fuji<\/em>. There are three varieties of wisteria\u2014pink, purple, and white\u2014that bloom on Fujiidera Temple\u2019s wisteria trellises. Because each variety flowers at a slightly different time, you can enjoy a different every time you visit.<\/p>\n
On the day I went, the purple blossoms were swaying gracefully in the breeze. The next time I go, I\u2019d love to visit when the pink or white flowers are in bloom and experience a different kind of floral beauty.<\/p>\n

Inside the temple grounds, a sweet and enchanting fragrance lingers in the air, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.<\/p>\n
When I visited, the wisteria weren\u2019t in full bloom yet, but the faint, gentle scent was still incredibly pleasant. I\u2019ve heard that when the flowers are at their peak, the fragrance becomes even richer, filling the entire temple grounds with a lovely aroma. Visiting during peak bloom would definitely be worth it!<\/p>\n
3 Types of Special Goshuin Stamps<\/h2>\n

One of the highlights of the Wisteria Festival is the special goshuin<\/em> (temple stamps) that are only available during the festival period!<\/p>\nDuring the 2025 event, three exclusive goshuin were offered: the \u201c1300th Anniversary of the Thousand-Armed Kannon Opening Commemorative Goshuin,\u201d the \u201cAmida and Twenty-Five Bodhisattvas Hall Dedication Commemorative Goshuin,\u201d and the \u201cWisteria Flower Commemorative Embroidered Goshuin.\u201d<\/p>\n

The one that especially caught my eye was the \u201c1300th Anniversary of the Thousand-Armed Kannon Opening Commemorative Goshuin.\u201d I found myself completely captivated by its delicate beauty. The stamp is a papercut-style goshuin unlike anything I had ever seen before.<\/p>\n
Depending on how you old it up, the expression of the Thousand-Armed Kannon seems to change, which gave me a deeply reverent feeling. It’s such a beautiful and absolutely captivating thing to hold!<\/p>\n

It’s a bit of an indulgence, but I also got the \u201cWisteria Flower Commemorative Embroidered Goshuin.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was amazed that goshuin can feature embroidery! It really shows how these temple stamps continue to evolve. The combination of wisteria flowers and the embroidered goshuin is truly special and only available during the festival period. That just makes it all the more attractive and desirable. <\/p>\n
The goshuin booth was pretty crowded. There was a line when I arrived so I’d recommend getting there a little early to purchase your stamp. I\u2019ve also heard that the papercut-style designs change every year, so be sure to check out the special goshuin when you visit!<\/p>\n
Donations to Support the Wisteria and Novelty Goods<\/h2>\n

Fujiidera Temple also offers a number of wisteria related novelty products and collects donations to fund the wisteria. When you enter the temple, just to the left you will see the goshuin stamp counter and a pop-up stand selling different items. <\/p>\n

The small and equally adorable ema<\/em> (wooden votive plaques) feature wisteria illustrations. They are offered in exchange for a donation of 500 yen or more.<\/p>\nMoney donated is used to fund cultivating the wisteria, helping to protect the flowers, and maintaining the temple grounds.<\/p>\n

Next to the ema, a variety of wisteria-themed goods were on display.<\/p>\n
From postcards and charms featuring wisteria designs, to aromatherapy items that let you enjoy the scent of the flowers, and even tenugui<\/em> hand towels, there were so many delightful items perfect for taking home as a memento of the Wisteria Festival. Everything was absolutely delightful!<\/p>\nHow Much is Admission for the Illuminations?<\/h2>\n

Admission to Fujiidera Temple\u2019s Wisteria Festival is free during the daytime, but the nighttime light-up is a special event. Admission is 500 yen.<\/p>\n
When entering through the South Gate, you\u2019ll find the ticket booth right away, where you can purchase your ticket. Just a heads-up: payment is cash only, so be sure to bring some money with you!<\/p>\n

The 2025 Fujiidera Wisteria Festival night illumination was held for two days only, April 18 & 19, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.<\/p>\n
Although you must pay an admission fee for nighttime event, the temple grounds and main hall are absolutely beautifully at night illuminated with lights and lanterns. Visitors can enjoy a truly majestic and atmosphere so I highly recommend it.<\/p>\n
When the Wisteria Festival Is Held and How to Get There<\/h2>\n

During the Wisteria Festival, entry to the temple is only possible through the South Gate. You can get there either by train or car.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re driving, please note that you\u2019ll need to use nearby paid parking lot, so plan accordingly.<\/p>\n

From central Osaka: Take the Hanshin Expressway Route 13, the Kinki Expressway, and the Nishi-Meihan Expressway. It takes about 35 minutes to reach the temple by car.<\/p>\n
