In November of 2025, local washi lamp artist James Chappell and his wife Kotose opened a joint establishment in the Minato Shopping Street. Here guests can bask in the dreamy world of washi and experience what the owners call a \u201cHot spring of warm light\u201d. The washi lamps cast a soft glow throughout the studio and cafe space, creating the most welcoming atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Washi is very strong and durable, but one of its special characteristics that makes it ideal for use in lighting, is the way it\u2019s able to diffuse light. The walls are lined in blue wallpaper echoing Vincent van Gogh\u2019s famous Almond Blossoms. A table by Italian fashion designer Alessandro Michele, sits nonchalantly in the corner.<\/p>\n

One of the most charming things about the cafe, was the collection of hand-painted cards illustrated by Kotose\u2019s grandfather and adorned with haikus by the illustrious poet Matsuo Bash\u014d. There\u2019s a piece to match each season and then more. The cards were all hand-painted by Kotose\u2019s grandfather or a friend. She changes out the decorative cards to match the cafe interior to each season and occasion. This and other thoughtful touches give hints of what you might see in a traditional Japanese tea room.<\/p>\n
