<\/p>\nNow that it’s cold outside, you’re probably not thinking about shaved ice… But don’t let that stop you from trying this new and refreshing trend in post-pub dining!<\/p>\n
Many people may already know about a phenomenon known as “shime-ramen”\u2013 when you indulge in a bowl of piping hot ramen at the end of a night out. The “shime” in its name refers to ending your night and the “ramen” is well, ramen. Now there is a new way to end your night on a lighter, sweeter, and arguably more refreshing note\u2013 “shime-gori”. The “gori” comes from the word for shaved ice, “kaki-gori,” and oh it is good! It is very, very good!!!<\/p>\n
The other day I visited this cheesecake specialty shop in the Fukushima neighborhood, an area near Osaka Station known for its extensive network of bar lined alleys. Cafe 12 is quaint and cute and everything I was looking for.<\/p>\n

There was so much on the menu to choose from, like tiramisu or the tropical mango and coconut. After a few moments considering the wide range of options, I finally decided on a rum raisin to match the daily special\u2013 sweet potato sauce. (For those of you who don’t intrinsically sense the flavor harmony about to take place, please bear with me. )<\/p>\n

The cafe was so charming and relaxing. I settled back in my chair and then\u2013\u2013\u2013 Wow! This is what I ordered, but I was still so impressed when it arrived.<\/p>\n

It was creamy and rich, but still fluffy and light. Obviously it melts in your mouth, but it left me so satisfied with my choice. There’s something about the subtle sweetness of sweet potatoes that compliments rum raisin so well. It’s almost like it sets the stage with a firm foundation and let’s the rummy raisins take off dancing through your whole palate. And then you get that refreshing kick from the cold ice.<\/p>\n
The shaved ice also came with a straw and some warm water so I could fully enjoy every last drop without getting too cold.<\/p>\n

Some people share the dessert, others eat it all by themselves. As I was finishing up, I realized this would be a great spot to bring a date, so I’m planning to bring my girlfriend here soon. There were a lot of other flavors on the menu that I would like to try, so we might have to make this a habit.<\/p>\n
On the way home, I took a short walk down Midosuji Blvd. to see the lights. This really is a romantic time of the year in Osaka! I hope all of your evenings are as sweet as mine. And don’t forget to try “shime-gori” the next time you’re out for a drink\ud83c\udf67<\/p>\n
