The shrine is affiliated with maritime safety, as well as agriculture, waka poetry, martial arts, and sumo wrestling.

The shrine buildings were originally constructed more than 1,800 years ago and the architectural style reflects this long history. This style is known as Sumiyoshi-zukuri and is characterized by a straight gable roof and over hanging eaves. It is the oldest style used in shrine construction and is a registered national treasure.

Visitors to the shrine may enjoy exploring one of the many auxiliary shrines, walking across the round Sorihashi (aka Taikobashi) Bridge, and taking photos at the many picturesque areas on shrine grounds. The shrine is exceptionally busy during the New Year holiday and holds a number of special events throughout the year, like Otaue (the annual rice planting ceremony June 14) and Sumiyoshi Matsuri (a festival held July30-Aug1).

[209,79,142
