A common perception of Japanese people is that they’re reserved & mild-mannered. While this may be true sometimes, things can change when you enter a drinking establishment. Plus, people from Osaka already have a reputation for talking a lot!

The Beer Gang

So a group walks into a bar and says “We’ll all have a beer”… This is the start to many a Japanese drinking party. Apparently this group strategy is thought to be the fastest way to have a drink in hand and get the party started. But recently there are reports of young people ordering different drinks and frustrating their bosses.

Bar Moms

Kitashinchi and other posh parts of town have a surprising number of very plain bars. They’re not particularly fancy and customers often come in alone. There’s something reassuring about that smiling face behind the bar and the taste of food like mom used to make.

The Crafty Type

From animals to boats to shapes and more… It seems like these women can make anything out of a chopstick wrapper or hand towel. It feels like some kind of improv origami show and I love it when they teach me how to make the shapes too. Sometimes I can’t tell if they’re trying to steal my heart or just my imagination…

The Sake Bearer

With bottle in hand and always ready to fill your glass, the sake bearer is a superhero of sorts and is recognized for showing superb drinking etiquette! There are lots of rules regarding how to hold the bottles and pour. However, rule #1 is to never let your associate’s glass sit empty!
