Over 28 million people are expected to visit Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan

The Expo is a massive event that will attract visitors from all over the world.
Even the 2020 Expo in Dubai, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, was visited by over 24 million people.

Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan is expected to welcome over 28 million visitors. The Expo will take place over a total of 184 days in 2025, opening on April 13 and closing on October 13. This works out to at least 150,000 visitors per day. That’s a lot of people!

Based on past Expos, visitor numbers will increase over time

Simple math predicts at least 150,000 visitors per day, but actual visitor numbers will be more complex than this.
Trends at past Expos show that visitor numbers generally increase over time.

Visitor numbers for the Aichi Expo: Gradual Increase after Opening

Let’s look at visitor numbers for the Aichi Expo held in 2005.
There were around 60,000 visitors in the first week, then visitor numbers gradually increased in the following weeks. There were over 200,000 visitors in the final week, and 22 million people in total visited the Expo.
We don’t know the exact reason for this trend, but perhaps people took a wait-and-see approach before deciding to visit. This increase in visitors over time has also occurred at other Expos.

The Expo is open from spring to fall. Check the weather and the calendar!

Let’s take a look at the period from April 13 to October 13 when the Expo will be held.
First, let’s examine the weather.

The table shows averages calculated from temperatures measured between 1991 and 2020.
As you would expect, high temperatures are observed during the summer months, with July and August showing average maximum temperatures consistently above 30°C.

In general, people have a range of temperatures at which they feel comfortable, and this range varies depending on the season.
In Japan, comfortable temperatures in spring (March to May) are 15 to 25°C, in summer (June to August) are 25 to 30°C, and in autumn (September to November) are 15 to 25°C. Humidity also has a significant effect on what feels comfortable, but since humidity can change depending on the weather, let’s leave that discussion for another time.
Looking at the table again, April, May, June and October seem like ideal months to visit the Expo.
However, June and July also coincide with the rainy season and experience over 170 mm of rainfall, while September also has over 150 mm of rainfall. High rainfall means a high proportion of rainy days.
Taking rainfall into consideration, April, May, and October seem to be the best months to visit!

Next, let’s consider the calendar.
The Golden Week holiday season in 2025 has four consecutive days off work from May 3 (Saturday) to May 6 (a National Holiday).
With Showa Day (April 29) falling on a Tuesday, based on the calendar, Golden Week in 2025 does not have an extended period of days off work.

Nevertheless, some people will take an 8-day holiday from April 29 to May 6, others an 11-day holiday from April 26 to May 6, and some a 9-day holiday from May 3 to 11. If you plan to take an extended vacation from work and visit Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan during the Golden Week holiday season, you can avoid the crowds by visiting on any weekday between April 28 and May 9.
School summer holidays are also in full swing through the latter half of July and the whole of August, so there will be higher numbers of students and family groups during this period.

Don’t forget to check the Expo website for updates on the latest events.

Summary: Here is when you should visit the Expo!

Here are our recommendations for when to visit based on visitor numbers at previous Expos, the weather in Japan, and the holiday calendar.

Avoid the crowds by visiting in April and May!

To avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting in April and May when visitor numbers are expected to be relatively low.
However, it’s best to avoid May 3 (Saturday) to May 6 (Tuesday), as this is the Golden Week period in Japan when large crowds are expected.

For the best weather, visit in April, May or June!

Springtime in Japan is pleasant with mild temperatures. April and May have a particularly large number of sunny days. Temperatures are also quite stable in June, though June also coincides with the rainy season when there is a higher chance of rain.
The heat of summer has also faded by October, the last month of the Expo. For the best weather, October is another great option.

For the best deal, visit in the first 2 weeks!

The price of a One-Day Ticket, which allows one entry at any time during the Expo is 7,500 yen for adults.
Opening Tickets are also available during the first 2 weeks. These tickets allow one entry and cost just 4,000 yen for adults!
First-Half Period Tickets are also available until the middle of July. These tickets also allow one entry and cost 5,000 yen for adults.
If you want to enjoy the Expo at a great price, get one of these tickets!

This was Bob’s look into the best times to visit Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
Personally, I want to visit during the first half of the Expo when there are fewer people.
I’ll get an Opening Ticket in the first two weeks, then I’ll probably go 3 or 4 more times in April and May!
The Expo will be here soon. Hey everyone, come to Japan, come to Osaka, come to the Expo!!
