Meet Osaka’s Cutest and Cuddliest Micro Pigs at MIPIG

Maido! Osaka Bob here.
I was looking for a new and exciting experience in Osaka, when I heard about MIPIG. And I just had to go!

I’ve been to plenty of animal cafes to spend time with cats, lizards, and owls, but this is a new one even for me. Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to spend quality time with friendly micro pigs in a relaxed, cozy setting?

Let me tell you everything you need to know before visiting, including how to book, prices, and tips for getting the best experience.

What Is MIPIG Cafe?

MIPIG Cafe is Japan’s largest chain of micro pig cafés, with multiple locations across the country, including Osaka. The cafés allow visitors to spend time with friendly micro pigs in a safe, comfortable environment while learning more about these intelligent animals. The Osaka location is right in the heart of Amemura, so it’s convenient to get to and easy to plan other sightseeing activities around your visit to MIPIG.

Unlike a traditional petting zoo, the experience is designed around the pigs’ natural behavior. Instead of chasing or picking them up, guests simply relax and allow the pigs to approach on their own. It’s a calm and surprisingly therapeutic experience that is popular with both locals and international visitors.

What Are Micro Pigs?

Micro pigs are a smaller breed of domestic pig that have been selectively bred to remain much smaller than traditional farm pigs. While they’re often called “mini pigs,” they aren’t tiny forever—they simply stay considerably smaller than standard livestock breeds.

The pigs at MIPIG Cafe are specifically from a strain of pigs from the UK. Thanks to their friendly personalities, many enjoy interacting with people and are happy to curl up on visitors’ laps.

One thing you’ll notice immediately is how warm they are. A pig’s body temperature is slightly higher than a human’s, making them feel surprisingly cozy when they decide your lap is the perfect place to rest.

Meet the Pigs at MIPIG Cafe Osaka

The Osaka location is home to around 30 micro pigs, ranging from squirmy piglets to adults up to three years old.

Each pig has its own unique personality and the staff call them all by name. Some are playful and curious, while others prefer to find a comfortable cushion and stay curled up in snoozing position. Since the pigs roam freely throughout the café, you can’t really choose the pig you want to interact with, but the staff will guide pigs to your lap to make sure you enjoy your visit.

While I was seated, the piglets kept piling on. They love to snuggle in and get cozy, so at one time I had 7 piglets on my lap.
I even got to touch a pig snout while I was there. It was surprisingly soft!

How to Enjoy Your Visit

It is a good idea to make a reservation before you go, although they do take walk-ins. However, if they are busy they may not be able to accommodate you when you arrive, especially if you are in a large group. Also, you can absolutely enjoy the cafe on weekends. But if you have chance to visit on a weekday you will probably get more attention from the pigs since it tends to be less crowded.

Guests should arrive 10 minutes before their reservation time to check in and receive a short orientation explaining how to interact with the pigs safely and respectfully.

Once inside, you can place any small belongings you have with you in a locker. Then the staff will give you a blanket for your lap. They will show you to the main part of the cafe where there are self-serve drinks and low tables scattered around the fairytale themed decor. Then you simply sit down, stretch out your legs, and wait for the pigs to climb on.

Visitors are asked not to pick up or hold the pigs, as this can cause unnecessary stress. Instead, allow the pigs to approach you at their own pace. Before long, one—or perhaps several—may decide your lap is the perfect place to relax.

The café staff are always available to answer questions and help ensure everyone, both humans and pigs, enjoys the experience.

Which Reservation Should You Book for a Visit to MIPIG?

MIPIG Cafe offers several session lengths and a private room option, but which is best for you?

A 25-minute session is probably ideal for travelers with a tight schedule who are in it for the novelty. Personally I booked the 55-minute session, which turned out to be the sweet spot. I could maximize my chances for plenty of pig cuddles. Once the pigs start to stack up on your lap, others will want to join in. I really only reached my maximum number of piglets around the 40 minute mark.

The café also recommends allowing one to two hours if your schedule permits, giving you a more leisurely and memorable visit.

Private rooms are also available and may be a better choice if you have children in your group. Some children may be frightened or uncomfortable with the pigs on their laps. For family groups, the private rooms are a great option to interact with the pigs in an even more relaxed setting. And guests who book a private room can have a chance to hold the pigs too.

MIPIG Cafe Osaka Prices

The pricing is straightforward.

25-minute session: ¥1,870 (ages 4 and above) / ¥770 (ages 3 and under)

55-minute session: ¥2,970 (ages 4 and above) / ¥770 (ages 3 and under)

Private rooms are an additional ¥550

Keep in mind that arriving late won’t extend your session ending time—you’ll still be charged for your original reservation time. Arriving early ensures you can enjoy every minute of your time with the micro pigs.

Animal Welfare Is a Priority

One reason MIPIG Cafe has become so popular is its commitment to responsible animal care.

The pigs are raised at MIPIG’s own micro pig farm, where they’re carefully socialized and receive professional care before joining the cafés. Inside the café, they’re free to move wherever they like and choose when—and with whom—they interact.

To protect the pigs’ health, visitors must follow several important rules.

Guests enter the cafe if they have:

* Traveled within the previous two days to a country where African Swine Fever has been reported.
* Had contact with pigs outside of MIPIG Cafe during the previous two days.

In addition, children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

These measures help ensure a safe and healthy environment for both the animals and guests.
