Horikawa Ebisu Jinja Shrine (堀川戎神社)

Kita

Horikawa Ebisu stone statue of Fukko Ebisu
This Shinto Shrine venerates three gods: Ebisu (one of the 7 gods of fortune affiliated with fisherman and good luck), Sukunahikona (a dwarf deity known for healing and affiliated with sake and hot springs), and Ameno Futodama (a god of divination and rituals) and holds a popular Tо̄ka Ebisu festival annually Jan. 9–11.
The shrine was officially moved to this location between 1352–1355 and it is affectionately known as Kita no Ebessan, as it is the main Ebisu shrine in the northern part of the city (aka Kita). Unfortunately, the shrine buildings were completely destroyed during WWII and they were gradually rebuilt over the years. The main sanctuary you see today was built in 1963.
The famous Fukkо̄ Ebisu statue on shrine grounds was carved from the pillar of a stone torii gate that destroyed during the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 2005. The statue is said to ward off disasters.
