Osaka’s best sunset spots
From observation decks to underground locations

There’s really nothing like unwinding at the end of a long day, letting your eyes rest after staring at a screen for hours, or putting your feet up and relaxing with a drink after seeing all the sites. Watching the sunset over the city or, better yet, below the ocean horizon, is the perfect way to bid the sun sayonara at dusk. Here are a few of the best places to see the sun set in Osaka.

♦Sunsets at the Sky Building Observation Deck

The Kuchu Teien Observatory at Umeda Sky Building is hands-down the most popular observation deck in Osaka. The impressive exterior and the feeling you get as you ride up to the tippy top of this 40-story building on the escalator is otherworldly!
As you pass through the see-thru escalator tunnel, it’s like your being transported onto a sci-fi movie set. And when you arrive on the observation deck, you’re greeted with a 360° open-air view where you can feel the wind while you take in the gorgeous scenery. Viewing the sunset from the observatory is guaranteed to take your breath away!
The evening scenery changes every few seconds so plan your visit in the evening and you’ll be able to see all the colors of dusk change into the night sky.

♦The Yuhi in Yuhigaoka means sunset

The Yuhigaoka neighborhood is centrally located in Osaka’s Tennoji Ward. The closest train station—Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka—is definitely a mouthful and the name includes that golden sounding Yuhigaoka, which means sunset hill.
Yuhigaoka was once on the edge of the ocean and it was a place where people gathered to watch the sunset over the horizon. Fast-forward to the present and the ocean has receded far enough that you can no longer see it, but it is still a beautiful place to watch the sun cast its final rays over the city.
The neighborhood is full of romantic charms like the many temples and stone walkways. It’s a place of deep history where you can sink deep into time. There are many places in the neighborhood to watch the sunset, but my favorite is near Ōe Jinja and the Aizenzaka Slope.

♦Views of Osaka Bay from Diamond Point

Take a trip out to the Osaka Bay Area for a front row seat to the sunset. If you head up to the observation deck of Cosmo Tower, you can take in a sweeping 360° panoramic view featuring a close look at Osaka Bay. And of course it’s stunning at dusk!

Just a 10-minute walk from Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel, this sunset spot is named Diamond Point for a reason. The sunlight glistens on the surface of the ocean all day long. The sound of wind in the air, the coming and going of ships along the water, and the passing of clouds overhead can pull you into a trance.

The sunset is so gorgeous, there is a pop-up restaurant during the time of year when the most impressive. Bring some wine and toast the end of another beautiful day in Osaka!

♦Osaka Classics: Osaka Bay & the airport

Did you know there are 3 arch-shaped floodgates in Osaka? Apparently, they are unique in the world, and only found in Osaka. And the sun sets through the middle of the arch when you look through the Aji River Floodgate, It’s absolutely stunning and this scenery is destined to change. Construction on this floodgate is scheduled soon, so this could be your last chance to see it.

Another famous place to watch the sunset is at Osaka International Airport (Itami Airport). You can watch planes taking off and landing juxtaposed against the sunset. This unique scenery is visible from the bank of the Senri River. Scenery is beautiful in daytime and absolutely magical at night.
